My Students

I teach 8th grade at an inner city, public school. My students need a lot of encouragement to actively engage in their assignments, but the one thing they love to do is create posters to display their learning!

My students often struggle with motivation: motivation to get up and come to school, motivation to stay awake, motivation to participate, motivation to accomplish an assignment.

Learning for all can sometimes be a challenge as a teacher when students lack the motivation.

My Project

However, if you put Sharpies in the hands of my 8th graders, great things happen! High quality work just flows from their markers and their learning is clearly displayed in all of its richness. Who knew motivation came in the form of gel pens and markers? We often create posters to display our learning simply because they love it so much!

There is a story about how a young man walked down the beach throwing the star fish back into the sea when another young man walked past and said, "There are too many, you can't possibly save them all." The first young man replied, "That may be so," as he threw another into the ocean, "but it matters to that one." I often think of this story when working with my kids.

Wont you walk along the beach with me and let's engage another student in their learning and perhaps we can save them all.
