This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Lancaster, PA has an amazingly diverse student body, rich with culture and history, strengthened through challenge and adversity. Few people know that Lancaster, PA has the largest per capita population of refugees in the country. While many of our students have family in other parts of the world, most students have not traveled far beyond the Lancaster/Philadelphia region.

Our students work hard, proudly mastering new skills and reaching out for their goals.

Our teachers work hard to support them and provide challenging lessons with differentiated content to meet the needs of all of our students.

My Project

After our long period of COVID isolation and remote learning, I want to work with our returning students to create a saltwater coral reef aquarium stocked with several fish and living coral. This will give them a rare peek into the magical underwater world (like Finding Nemo, but real) of a saltwater ecosystem.

In addition, the aquarium will be located in a library classroom so all students will have access to see it throughout the school year.

We've chosen the highly rated and easy to set up and maintain 32 Gallon Bio Cube Coral Aquarium. It includes most of what is needed to set up a tank: heater, filter, etc. I have included several other elements that can be added into the system to make it even more educational for students, as well as supplies to last a year or so. In addition, I have selected a rolling cart so if it needs to be moved that is possible.

Finally, using our own funds we will purchase the saltwater fish and coral reef from our local That Fish Place, where we hope to one day take a group of kids to on a field trip.
