Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 9th grade English to a diverse group of students at a small, inner city school in New York. My students are a wonderful bunch that face many struggles coming from a low-income neighborhood. Although our school is dedicated to the vision of each student attending college, we lack the funding of larger, more established schools.

One of the stumbling blocks on our students' path to college is passing the Science Regents. They need to pass two in order to receive the Advanced Regents Diploma. To help support our very dedicated Science Department, I created a Forensics Unit for our study of informational texts in English. Forensic science is ideal since the students are so enthusiastic about it. (Thank you TV!) Equally important, though, forensics is the perfect scaffold for science since it shares connections with earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics. With two forensic texts, my students will analyze charts, graphs, diagrams, photos, text layout, case files, and more within the context of forensics. To make our unit come alive, though, I would like the students to conduct labs after each section: crime scene investigation, chemical analysis, and biological evidence. They would then write up their own case file, using the scientific knowledge they have acquired.

With three forensic science kits and two supplemental texts, this fascinating subject can become hands on for my students. Students are more engaged when learning is relevant to the real world. Who knows, some of my students may enter this exciting field!

By funding this engaging cross-curriculum unit, you will be expanding my students' knowledge of science and English. Your extra support will make my students' path to college a little easier.
