This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On a typical day in my classroom, my students will be working on any number of projects. We have class assignments to work on every single day but also contest entries, special projects and school decorations to create. My classroom is a busy place.

My students come from low socioeconomic households.

Our school is ninety-five percent free or reduced price lunch. We have an Art Magnet program at our school that requires an audition to enroll. Many of my students come to school early so that they can work on their classwork or work on special projects. During this time, I let them try out new materials or propose ideas for new projects. My students are never satisfied with good enough. They are always trying to learn new techniques that will improve their skills. For many of my students, art is the one place where they can excel and make their voices heard. The work that my students create has been recognized locally and nationally. I want my students to be proud of the work that they produce. By entering contests and exhibitions, my students have a chance to be recognized for their hard work and creativity.

My Project

These materials will help us to complete our art room. My classroom is a special place where my students are free to explore their creativity. They are often surprised by what they are able to create. We will be using the magnetic whiteboards that I am requesting to display student work in the classroom and facilitate group critiques of student work. Although we have art exhibitions throughout the school year, it can be a challenge to find time and space to display work in the art room.

I am requesting a variety of art supplies for my students to create and experiment with new art work.

This way we will have all sorts of new projects to display. My students are always excited to work with new materials. This project will make that possible. The canvas panels will be used for paintings by students in all three levels of the magnet program. Canvas can be one of the more expensive items to purchase, which limits the opportunities that my students have to become familiar with the material. My beginning students build their skills by creating paintings of geometric designs. These assignments teach them to control their materials in artworks with limited variables. My advanced students work on their understanding of color-mixing and painting techniques in large landscape paintings and realistic portrait paintings.

Along with the canvas, we also need new good quality paintbrushes. We do have some paintbrushes but they are not good quality and my students complain of the difficulty they experience using them. Even practicing good brush-care, paintbrushes tend to have a short lifespan in the middle school classroom. I also requested some painting mediums and art resin so that my students can experiment creating texture in their art work.
