I have a group of bright, creative, caring, and understanding 5th graders. I am such a lucky teacher as I taught this same group of fantastic students in 4th grade.
My students love anything to do with team building, and they love being able to explore the world through lots of different means.
When they showcase their learning, it could be in the form of a piece of art work, a puppet show, a LEGO build, or a Google Slides presentation. See, I told you these kids were creative!
The school which they attend is one of four elementary schools in our town. It is a high poverty, low income school with over 60% receiving free or reduced rate lunches. We are a school with lots of pride and practice, and our mission statement is being responsible, respectful, and safe. Our school is made of grades Pre-K through fifth grade and has Title I services.
My Project
Every minute of every day, we make choices in how we treat those we encounter in life. We can choose to be kind or we can choose to be cruel.
"Wonder" by R.J.
Palacio poignantly shows readers of all ages how our own words and actions are capable of building up or breaking down the human spirit.
As teachers we want our students to be strong academically, but honestly we want them to be GOOD PEOPLE. A big part of them being good people is helping them to navigate relationships including bullying.
"Wonder" provides the best discussion for what bullying is and how we can prevent it.
We have read the books and now we want to go and see the movie! Help us get to the theater so that we can deepen the discussion of choosing kind in a new and fresh way!
