Help Mrs. Vandermore

As an elementary school counselor for grades k – 8 in a high needs community, I want to help to celebrate the many different heritage months on our school calendar. For almost every month we celebrate a heritage month such as Asian-Pacific American Heritage, Hispanic Heritage, Native American Heritage, Polish American Heritage and both women and black history months; but to do so, this year at my school, I need the materials.

My school is a school in a high needs community in Illinois, I want to help implement cultural awareness through art at my school but need the materials to do so. Our students come to us with such great potential but staggering needs as many are homeless. This project will help to bridge gaps that may allow these students to rise above seemingly insurmountable obstacles. I want the students to feel that their cultures are valued and as the school counselor I need help. We do not have an art teacher to help me with planning an art activity to go along with the celebration of the heritage month so I need books with activities for each month.

My motivation behind introducing cultural awareness through art to our students is to help improve the overall quality of the school. As cultural diversity continues to increase in our school, it’s important that our students embrace and welcome this development. By embracing different ethnic backgrounds and teaching students about differences, I hope to help students learn tolerance and sensitivity — attributes that are critical to classroom learning, group cooperation and individual growth. Your support will allow me to bring art into the classroom where art is absent. Your support will allow me to help my students celebrate their many cultural differences. One of the key benefits of increasing cultural awareness at my school is to help reinforce the self-worth of your students.
