My Project

I'm a small group reading intervention teacher in Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school and over 95% of its students receive free lunch.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

Executive functioning skills are crucial for classroom success. Students need the ability to set and achieve goals, create study plans, maintain focus, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks effectively. I have worked for over 20 years with diverse learners, including those with special needs, and see a need to help students build their foundational executive function strategies in a systematic and explicit way. This SMARTS curriculum and associated student workbooks would be a tremendous asset in building these executive functioning skills in students to promote self-confidence, resilience, and academic success. Lessons are divided four 20-minute sessions and can be easily integrated our day to help students build time management, perspective taking, and conflict resolution skills.
