My Students

I have had the pleasure of teaching students in my current school district for 24 years. Each year brings new personalities and excitement into my classroom. The one thing that never changes is the students’ love of learning.

Kindergarten is so much more than learning colors, counting, and reciting the alphabet.

The biggest element of learning I have found is that the students want specifics, they want vocabulary, they want skills, they want KNOWLEDGE. I believe in treating the students as learners in an ever changing world and they deserve the opportunity to have experiences and acquire skills that will lead them to achieve whatever goals they set for themselves in life.

We are a Title I school and have a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch. Due to this high percentage, all students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are fortunate to be represented by great diversity with our students. The students are exposed to a variety of culture, languages, dialects, as well as physical and emotional challenges. They are accepting and empathetic of the ever growing changes of differences each child brings to our classroom.

My Project

Learning involves more than paper and pencil. Children learn through manipulation of hands on activities. We will use the Melissa and Doug floor puzzles to use our spatial awareness to place the pieces together. Being able to manipulate a puzzle piece by rotating and translating the shape to fit another increases their understanding in math. The Magnetic Building Sticks will be used to make various shapes to construct models of buildings and landscapes students are familiar with, as well as test out a hypotheses in a science experiment. The Kindergarten Core Standards (Standard K.G.5 Model and create shapes/ Standard K.G.6 Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes) set the expectation that children can analyze, compare, and create various shapes and structures using existing shapes. In science they are given a task to construct a bridge with various blocks to allow a "boat" to float under it. These types of activities will engage students in mathematical and scientific processes that will encourage critical thinking and problem solving which they will encounter throughout their lives inside and outside of school.

The availability of various building materials in my classroom will allow these young children the opportunity to explore and manipulative objects using critical thinking skills that will enhance their learning skills in later grades.

I want to provide learning opportunities that encourage and excite students to seek out STEM related activities as well as develop a high appreciation and interest in the fields of science and math.
