My Students

"Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin My goal is to create a comfortable learning environment that provides students with authentic educational experiences daily. Our classroom is constantly abuzz with conversation, movement and discovery.

I am a kindergarten teacher in a public, rural elementary school in South Carolina.

There are 12 ambitious girls and 7 enthusiastic boys in my wonderful class. Each morning, my students come to me with an exciting desire to learn. We start out each morning by saying, "We are the class of 2027, and today we are going to have a FANTASTIC day!" I am working to provide my students with learning experiences that are authentic and involve them in their learning.

My Project

With the ability to hatch ducks in our classroom, my kindergarteners will have the opportunity to become real scientists, study embryology, and the life cycle of a duck at a kindergarten level. This experience will not only be memorable and exciting for students, but it will also provide them the opportunity to practice many essential life skills such as observing, researching, problem-solving, and communicating and many more. Students will also learn about the different stages of the duck life cycle, and after the eggs have hatched, the students will gain the responsibility of caring for the baby ducks. I believe that this experience will provide my students with an authentic opportunity to practice many important skills and foster a love for learning and inquiry at a young age.

By taking students' natural questioning and turning it into a chance for their directed learning, I believe this experience will foster a learning of science and inquiry at a young age that will carry on with them throughout their lives.

This will be an experience that they will remember having responsibility in and feel pride in their successes that will follow them into their upcoming school years and beyond.
