My Students

I am fortunate enough to be part of an amazing community of passionate educators, committed families, and the hardest working middle-schoolers around. From a diverse array of cultural backgrounds, my students learn Common Core content in both English and Mandarin.

In the face of these rigorous demands, the creativity and grit of my seventh and eighth graders consistently inspires me to push to strengthen my own practice as a teacher.

We face challenges, but we face them together. A Title I school, many of our students lack access to badly needed services, especially those related to social and emotional supports. Vying for spots in the highly competitive specialized high schools here in New York City, my students face mounting academic and social pressures, which often lead them into anxiety and depression.

My Project

I started practicing yoga ten years ago, when I first began teaching ELA and social studies at my school. I'm an ardent believer in conscious communication and the power of breathing through challenges like stressful classroom interactions or a high-stakes test.

I have always tried to make my classroom a haven for learning.

But it takes special training to transmit these skills to young people in our increasingly fraught world. In the times we are living in, I have become increasingly aware of the importance of making school feel like a safe place. We need to foster a community of thinkers and problem-solvers who will one day be themselves a force for social justice.

I have been lucky enough to receive yoga mats donated from my local yoga center, but mats are not enough. I need training to learn how to bring core mindfulness and social-emotional supports to my students in the fall. The Breathe For Change yoga certification course for educators will enable me to bring badly needed balance and playfulness to the classroom next year.
