This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach English Language Learners at a Title I school in the Bronx. My students are inquisitive, curious, energetic, and love to learn. My students are in Kindergarten and First Grade - when the foundation of phonics and literacy is built. These years are crucial in developing the skills required to be a lifelong reader.
Due to school closures last year and this year's blended learning model, my students have many literacy skills to catch up on.
My goal is for my students to become fluent readers by the end of this year, but we need many materials to achieve our reading goals. Please help me purchase phonemic awareness activities and games for my students to learn this year.
My Project
My students are primarily English Language Learners from low-income homes. I frequently hear from my students that they do not have books at home. I plan to distribute the Mo Willems and Biscuit books to my students so they will have high-quality materials to read over the summer. They can read these books with their families, to help support literacy learning at home. I plan to use the WH-question and 'Name That Category' games to activate reading comprehension and critical thinking skills in my students. We will use these games in school to boost students' phonemic awareness and comprehension skills. These activities will help my students succeed in their language learning and in school overall. These are skills they can take with them throughout their lives. These books and games will help foster a lifelong love of reading and learning! They will be forever grateful for your contribution to this project.
