My Students

"The only way to LEARN mathematics is to DO mathematics." My 2nd Graders have just began partaking in Math Workshop. The workshop method allows my students to experience hands-on learning, peer learning, independent learning, and small-group learning.

My 2nd Graders have vibrant and unique personalities and energies.

They are active and eager and willing to learn. The Math Workshop method allows me to meet their diverse needs as both learners and children. Our school building is extremely old and our classrooms are small and somewhat outdated. We make do with what we have, but with the rigorous new standards and expectations for our students, we teachers have to be constantly developing new and exciting ways to teach and learn. This can be somewhat challenging with the budget cuts and cost-saving measures that our local school districts are having to deal with. My classroom is almost solely teacher-funded and my second graders rely on me to provide them with appropriate learning experiences and opportunities in order for them to be successful.

My Project

If my second graders had an iPad Mini to use during Math Workshop, the possibilities could be endless. Even just ONE iPad could make a huge difference. The mathematics apps that are available to purchase are updated and mostly aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Being able to take turns on the iPad would allow my students' math skills to develop and grow. With magnetic math manipulative, my students would be able to take part in small-group and peer learning with hands-on objects. Most of my students are kinesthetic and visual learners. The incorporation of hands-on math manipulative would deepen their mathematical understanding and foster academic growth and success. My students would no longer have to rely on traditional pencil and paper methods, their learning could take place in the form of technology and hands-on learning and growing.

With the fulfillment of this project request, my Math Workshop method will allow my students to take part in valuable learning experiences and opportunities in the field of mathematics.

Having hands-on tools and technological tools at their fingertips will benefit my second graders in an abundance of ways. As I quoted earlier, "The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics." This project will truly make a difference in my students' lives by allowing them to DO math each and every day!
