This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations-something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own."

I am a Second grade teacher in one tough neighborhood in New York.

Although our school is located in an area notorious for high rates of poverty my students love learning and are always looking for ways to improve their reading! One of my goals is to ensure that my students develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime. However, my school only provides us with some books and many are not at the level the children are out nor are they at the interest level. We have a school library, but the books are also above their levels and can only check out one book at a time.

My Project

So, to foster this new found love, I need more books on their levels so the children can read without being frustrated. When kids are connected, they are more likely to comprehend more, which will improve their reading scores overall. The more books we have in the classroom, the more practice they get!

Your contribution will make a deep impact on my students learning.

It will provide the necessary books, in my classroom, that will allow my students this year and years to come the opportunity to be highly engaged and go deeper in reading.
