This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second grade classroom is filled with students who are new to the country and speak little or no English. They have come from all over the world: El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Liberia, Bhutan, Nepal, and Burundi. Many of them have come from refugee camps and have never had access to quality school supplies and/or materials. These kiddos are ready to learn and ready to succeed! They come to me with limited or no English and by the end of the year, it is always my hope they will be at or near grade level! "Learning is not a spectator sport, so let's play!"

My Project

Learning English is not just for my students to tackle, it is for their families as well. Most of my students come from various backgrounds, cultures, academic experience, etc. They are typically the first to come to this new country and jump into school and learn English. Their families are usually needing to learn English as well, but are limited in the amount of time they can take English classes due to family responsibilities and work. I want to help build success in my students, as well as their families!

Students will be able to take these activities home and share what they have learned with their families in order to better their English knowledge and to help give their families a better understanding.

The Alphabet Pebbles and Phonics Pebbles will be great for students to take home and use with younger siblings and any non-English speaking family member. This will help give them the foundation of letters and sounds which will, in turn, help with the early stages of learning to read in English. The Word Family Flash cards will be great for quizzing each other on the different word families which will help enhance their English vocabulary. The carpets requested will help create a safe and comfortable environment for family school events!

It is my hope that by sharing what they have learned at school with their families, my students will have a higher chance of being academically successful at grade level by the time they finish with me and head into classrooms with students who speak English as their primary language. Being able to "be the teacher" at home gives my students ownership of what they have learned!
