We want to be non-fiction gurus! By adding a subscription to Scholastic News and Science Spin to our classroom this will help us become more familiar with real life things such as life cycles, weather, etc. This will enrich our classroom and keep us up-to-date on what's happening in the real world. I want to be able to provide my incoming 2016-2017 group of first graders with a variety of text options to keep them excited about learning and reading.
My Project
Scholastic News and Science Spin are a great classroom resource because it allows for each student to have their own personal copy. Having their own copy allows for them to highlight, underline, and write in their copy as needed. When we finish with an issue, they are then able to take it home and share with their families all about what they learned. This is a real treat for them, because many students do not have access to books or magazines at home. This subscription to Scholastic News and Science Spin will help me cover many of the required first grade standards. We will use this subscription to do the following things: know and use various text features, identify the main topic and retell key details in a text, ask and answer questions about key details in a text, describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text, and so much more! The pack of Post-It easel pad flip charts will allow for me to make charts for each lesson we do and refer back to. We do not currently have science or social studies textbooks and our access to non-fiction text is very limited. This subscription will allow for students to have access to more non-fiction text. Scholastic News does a fantastic job of making non-fiction fun with the added common core lesson plans for each issue, as well as offering technology components for every issue.
This subscription will allow me to offer them grade level reading material that is about real people and real life events.
The beautiful photographs, awesome diagrams, and cool captions in each issue always leave us wanting to know MORE. Please help me offer my 2016-2017 students with Scholastic News and Science Spin to help enrich our learning!
