Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science is about curiosity and discovery. Science concepts should be accessible to all, no matter what their literacy level. However, without access to resources, it is time consuming and challenging to create adequate readings for my students. I want every student to be able to engage in Science.

I teach about 90 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in a urban public school in DC.

They come from diverse educational, economic, and cultural backgrounds. The students are curious and love hands on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, really tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences.

My Project

I am asking for a wide variety of Science content books. These books cover a wide variety of topics that we cover in our 6th grade Science classroom, including electromagnetism, atoms and compounds, life science, and earth science. My students come to me with a wide range of reading levels. Having books on the same content at different reading levels will enable every student to have access to the concepts we are studying in Science. When my students are not restrained by their reading ability, Science will come alive for them.

Help my students see success in Science.

Nothing is more frustrating than being held back in Science by difficulties in reading. No child should be denied access to the content, and these books will help both my struggling readers and those who are ready for additional enrichment.
