Help Update Our Classroom Library!

My students need a variety of texts-- multilevel, multigenre, and multimodal-- to best understand universal themes of literature. My students need books that aren't falling apart and present them with different learning experiences.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fourteen to sixteen years old, and attend high school at an urban, Title One school. All of our students receive free or reduced price lunch, and over a third of students are identified as an exceptional education population. Despite all this, they are still eager learners, when their attention is focused. Our goal, as an entire school this year, is to encourage our students to love reading again.

Our classrooms are dilapidated, textbooks are outdated and technology is virtually nonexistent; our school district is rated among the highest generational poverty nationwide.

Teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction without the requisite tools to teach our students. Although, the opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population, they are all dreamers, and they all deserve the best!

My Project

Our English Department shared library has materials that haven't been updated for more than 10 years. Students have been used to using books that are old, torn, and often outdated. Our students deserve a better educational experience and it is our job as educators to introduce them to multiple genres of literature.

In an area of so much poverty, it is important to find texts that students can connect with and learn to love reading again; it is even more important to have a variety of texts that students can access.

Many students in our school have expressed that the only reading they have ever done has taken place in school. Help us ensure that we can provide all our students with the educational opportunity to expand their horizons with literature and have a more meaningful learning experience.
