My Students

Hook a reader once and they're hooked for life. Our school has redone our reading program this year to center around student choice. While our expectations have been updated, our library has not. We need some high interest books so students can have access to the books they enjoy and want to read.

My students are the best bunch of seventh graders you will ever meet.

While some love to read and devour books, others struggle to reach the minimum requirement of 100 minutes per week. They come from a mixed set of backgrounds. Many are from low income homes and don't have many, if any books, in their homes. Our school is dedicated to helping as many kids as possible find a love for reading. We reworked our reading program to give students the best chance for this. We love our kids and want them to have every opportunity to succeed.

My Project

After having students fill out a book interest survey, the books we've requested were some of the top titles that students mentioned wanting that are not already in our class library. These are the books "straight from the students' mouths" that they would like to read. These are those most likely to grab their interest and set them on a lifelong love for reading.

If we are going to help students improve their reading abilities, we have to give them choice and freedom in what they read.

But choice is pointless if it is not enabled. My classroom needs to go beyond allowing students to read whatever they want by also providing them with these books and making them easily accessible.
