My Students

There is nothing worse than writing with a dull pencil!! Our classroom has no pencil sharpeners and the students really need to sharpen their pencils to keep their writing neat with clean lines. We make many mistakes that must be rewritten, and the pencils must be sharpened again and again. Help!

My students are second graders in an inner-city Philadelphia school.

Many of them come from single family homes or homes where the grandparents have custody. They face many challenges that we, as adults, did have to go through. For all of this, they are so eager to learn, and come in every morning with the energy to do it!! I enjoy every moment in the classroom with them. They attend a K-8 school which receives free breakfast for all the students in the building, and also free and reduced lunches for those families that qualify. The children in my room are filled with pride when they get an answer right, and the smile that comes from their achievement is enough to make me smile too! I love being with them, and want them to have everything they need to be successful. Right now we are working on moving their letters closer together to from words, and also making their letters smaller. There is a lot of erasing and rewriting going on, but we cannot sharpen their pencils.

My Project

If we were able to have these electric pencil sharpeners in our classroom it would really inspire my students to write as neatly as they can and to not worry about having a dull pencil when they are finished. The children feel so much pride when they bring a piece of writing with a freshly sharpened pencil and followed the directions to write smaller and to bring their letters closer together to form words. We would not worry about making mistakes and having to rewrite something because the children could sharpen their pencils and get ready for another try. I want them to learn that mistakes are find to make, as long as we erase and try again. I want them to learn also about the kindness of others, and how something like this will remind us to be kind to others as well. Having these sharpeners will help us with Math, Social Studies, Science, and Reading. I never want to hear that a student cannot participate in an activity because they do no have a sharpened pencil.

This project is important because it will help young writers and learners to always have a sharpened pencil.

Sometimes it's a simple thing like having your favorite pencil fresh out of the sharpener that energizes you to want to work hard, and also neatly. I remember days like that when I was little. This project will help my students all year long by keeping their pencils sharp and always ready to write!! Right now we have no sharpener, and I truly believe a sharpener is what we truly need!
