My Students

My school is located in New York City. Hurricane Sandy left families without clothing, school supplies, and other necessities. I am currently collecting clothing and food from colleagues, friends, and neighbors to donate to the families in the community.

My students are a loving group of young men and women.

I teach two groups of all male and female classes. The gender base classes help my students focus on their academics and need to create a strong identify necessary to be a productive students. The school was graded a "F" school two years ago. Today, the school has shown a great deal of growth. We earned a "C" on our progress report and hope to earn a "A" this year. Unfortunately, the hurricane and many other obstacles make teaching my students a very difficult task. I truly believe "Education is the great equalizer to any obstacle". The supplies we need is as important as the food, coats, and water my school is currently collecting to supply to our students and their families. We have a community share day on Sunday, November 11, 2012. To me, the protractor used to measure angles is as important as the water I will be serving on Sunday. In addition, I have selected 15 students leaders to train as group facilitators.

My Project

As I mentioned earlier, the material requested is as important as the water. I see businesses donated millions of bottles of water and candy bars. Yet, students are still lacking the basic supplies necessary to succeed in school. I will use the math supplies during lunch study hour, after-school remediation session on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, I will use the materials to support the math program during Saturday Academy. The average score on our baseline assessment in math were 36% and 46% in my classes. I plan to use the materials to ensure study groups practice, learn, and re-visit math concepts aligned to graphing, number systems, math facts, and geometric constructions, which are essential skills necessary for my students to show progress at the end of this year. In addition to the study groups, I will organize my instructional practices into six groups lead by student leaders trained with the materials. Students leaders will master skills and peer teach other students.

My project is important because my students deserve as equal education as any other student in New York City.

I understand the way to help the families during this time is to give back to the families. To request school supplies is the best way for educators to give back to families. There is more to do in addition to given supplies and I so happy your organization is here to give in anyway necessary to help our students succeed. This project will make a difference and be a great equalizer.
