Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a low-income but highly spirited high school. The 400 students are almost 100% Black and Hispanic, with a few Middle Eastern and a few Asian students.

These Gen Z students are motivated and ready to become change makers as soon as we teach them how to create specific goals and how to work toward reaching them through research and active civic engagement!

Although this library is being created for a new AP Criminal Justice course that will be co-taught by me and a Howard University professor, these resources will be available for use by all students in the school.

My Project

The first goal of this school to prison pipeline library is to provide our high school students with an in depth understanding of how the justice system has been created to keep communities of color oppressed. The students will be invited and encouraged to use these resources to participate in conversations about the history of oppression and how the prison system was created to mirror the systems of slavery and cash cropping. The conversations will include a focus on the privatization of prisons and how they, as consumers, have the power to impact those businesses that economically benefit from exploited prison labor.

After the students gain an understanding of how and why the racist criminal justice system is designed the way it is, they will use the remaining resources to learn how to develop challenges to the racist system and how to make their voices and demands heard.

Learning these skills are especially important because today's high school students have the power and the passion to become true change makers!
