Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Could you imagine being able to go through science class without hands-on learning? Due to the lack of state funding, my science class will not be receiving a smart-board in the classroom like many schools are receiving. I would like to instruct using more technology.

I am an 8th grade science teacher serving approximately 150 students a day.

An average student at my school has a reading level between a 5th-7th grader and the majority of the students come from a low-income background. Many schools are being supplied with computer-like SmartBoards. However, my Science class will not receiving one due to the lack of state funding. The students lack motivation due to the lack of supplies that can be offered at school and on my own pay, unfortunately I cannot afford all the supplies I would like for my students to have. Many have no experience with PowerPoint or word programs and have never heard of Bill Nye the Science Guy. I would like to help bring the world of advancing technology to my students who are sadly under-served at school and at home.

My Project

Currently, one teacher owns an LCD projector in the whole building, and it quite competitive to borrow. Teacher and administration all compete to borrow it for their own work and classrooms. By having my own projector, I am able to use it for the students I teach and during the times I am not using it I may also allow other teachers to borrow it. Students will be able view more detailed presentations according to the science lesson that I am teaching and view updated videos that are not on VHS. Currently the students take notes by viewing the dry erase board but many students have trouble because they have problems with their eyesight. Many students cannot afford glasses and so with PowerPoint presentations I can adjust the font to accommodate all students. We can record important lesson points and post them around the classroom on easel pads to enforce main ideas. Lastly, I have previously bought 2 sharpeners for the class and all have been overheated.

Please support my project to support a student-centered learning environment.

Due to the lack of state funding to my school, my students are missing out on the endless possibilities that technology can show them. Students who have eyesight trouble will benefit greatly by taking notes and viewing presentations using a projector than looking at the board and students will be able to have more visuals around the classroom to emphasize main ideas of the lesson.
