Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My class is comprised of very motivated, special education students. My students come from less than ideal homes and in most situations, school is the warmest part of their day. Despite their personal situations, they come to school each day wanting to learn. Isaac seeks guidance in school.

My students with the most severe reading disabilities wish to access our audio texts. Our headphone set is of poor quality and has broken down. However, speakers and headphones are necessary for us to access these texts in our individual and group reading sessions.

Dyslexia responds to interventions! Without at least basic literacy skills, our students are hopeless in the job market. Audio texts are an empirically validated and evidence-based intervention for students with severe learning disabilities. Using audio texts in a lesson, students will be able to integrate phonemic awareness, decoding skills and comprehension while verifying their reading process constantly through the audio text. We're asking for the bare minimum resources to carry out this intervention.

In Their Own Words

We want headphones for our audio lab. We can't read these books alone. We need help. All we need is a way of listening. Can you help? - Angel I like books but I have trouble reading. I just need some help from the audio text to learn to read right. Please help out. - Isaac

It's simple! We can just be able to read better. In our Pearson green books, we can listen to the texts and have better comprehension and read quicker. - Isaac We're going to use it everyday. Then we're going to practice all the time. It's much more fun when I listen. - Angel

Without some headphones there is no way we can use our Pearson green books. All we want to do is get better at reading and this is a good way. - Isaac We need help to get better at reading and writing. That way I won't have to have Mr. Harvey fixing my writing all the time! - Angel
