My Students

Have you ever had to take the road less traveled? That's exactly what my students have to do each day. All of my students have moderate to severe autism and while they are capable of so much, the path for them to get to where they want to be is often a difficult one.

I have a classroom of six extremely energetic boys, all diagnosed with moderate to severe forms of autism.

We are at a low-income school in Brooklyn, New York. My students range in cognitive abilities from that of an 3-year-old, to that of an 8-year-old. Many of my students are minimally verbal. Each of my students has very unique needs, and I'm fortunate enough to work in a phenomenal school, where our entire staff works tirelessly to make sure our students achieve as much as possible. As middle schoolers, several of my students have the potential to learn to read, but they have no phonetic (letter sound) awareness. They learn best through memorizing sight words. To them, words are just like pictures, so they learn their words through systemic repetition and practice. My students overcome several challenges from the moment they wake up in the morning, and I want to make the challenge of reading easier on them! The Edmark Reading program will give them the chance to become successful readers.

My Project

Reading is an essential skill, one that all children deserve to learn. I have students who have immense potential when it comes to reading, but traditional methods will not work for them. The Edmark Reading Program was specifically designed for students like mine! It uses a systematic, research-based approach to teach students who don't have letter-sound awareness, how to read. My ultimate goal for my students is for them to have a job once they graduate high school. While there are jobs available for people who don't know how to read, my students' chances of getting a job in the future will be greatly increased if they are able to read. This program is filled with more than 150 words coupled with age-appropriate stories, worksheets, homework, games, and so much more! It takes an approach to reading that is as unique as my students. Lastly, it is centered in repetition which is key for my students with autism, as repetition is how they experience the most success.

Think about how quickly and easily you just read this entire project proposal.

You probably didn't think twice about it, right? That's not the case for my students. While they understand the same concepts as many of their same-age peers, they haven't been exposed to a program that teaches them to read in the unique way they need to be taught. I'm confident that this program will unlock my students' potential to read and eventually help them become independent and have their own job some day!
