Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach twenty-nine diverse and curious fourth-graders. All of whom are creative and eager to demonstrate their knowledge in the classroom. Our school is a Title I school located within Los Angeles.

The students enjoy engaging in challenging and thought-provoking tasks that allow them to push not only themselves but one another, to dig deeper and think more critically.

In our classroom, we celebrate one another's differences, inclusive of divergent thinking and strategies. Furthermore, I encourage students to show their work in ways and environments that are conducive towards their success.

My Project

As mentioned previously, differences are celebrated in our classroom. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and find what works best for them, in order to have success both in the classroom and beyond. This includes giving students the opportunity to have agency and recognize not only what their preferred learning style is, but also the environment that best supports them. For some, this may include sitting at a traditional desk, for others it is sitting or even laying on the floor, and others prefer having the option to get up if they feel they need to.

Every student is different, and how they learn is just as unique as they are.

Therefore, being able to give students whiteboards and clipboards to work in ways that support their needs is critical not just in their learning but also in the effort to be a more equitable educator.
