Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in the Bronx, and come from all walks of life. They have difficulties at such a young age that I've never had to worry about but they come to school through it all. I try to create a safe, welcoming and warm environment in my classroom but they are the ones who make it special.

In a neighborhood that makes them grow up faster than they should, coming to school is a place where they can feel okay to be vulnerable, explore their interests, have access to updated technology, and feel able to embrace their uniqueness.

We have a class mantra that we say everyday and my wish is that they can carry these words with them in life to help them remember their worth. "I am somebody, I'll be a better somebody when I leave. I am powerful, and I am strong. I deserve the education that I get here. I have things to do, people to impress, and places to go."

My Project

The "Who Was" series would be an excellent incorporation into our library for students to learn and explore famous historical and worldly figures in an engaging way. In this series, there is a biography for every type of child!

The biggest struggle I find for students is having access to enough books that are interesting to their own life but also push themselves as learners.

This series is a way to bridge their hobbies and passions such as science, music, sports, or art and learning about history by finding a person that can inspire them to pursue their dreams all while reading!
