My students need s a class set (30) of copies of 1984 by George Orwell. Studying this novel will allow my students to add another classic novel to our repertoire and also aid in critical thinking.

My Students

Working in a low-income city where 85% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and several grade levels behind, challenges could certainly derail our students' dreams for the future. However, my 11th graders continue to rise to every occasion and push themselves.

The way to improve Trenton, NJ is to challenge children to critically think, respect each other, and push through every obstacle.

Our students have outperformed other Trenton schools in state assessments and 100% of our last three graduating classes were accepted to 4-year colleges and universities. Please join us in continuing to change the face of our city, our state, and our world.

My Project

Critical thinking skills directly impact test scores while simultaneously developing our students' personal opinions. These skills prepare them both for college and for life as responsible citizens.

Studying George Orwell's novel 1984 and the use of propaganda will aid my students in evaluating the language and influences used in our world today while developing their own critical thinking skills.

100% of my students are Latino or African Americans, and therefore are directly impacted by our current political scene with an invested interest in how our society uses language to influence the opinions of its citizens. In a world where they believe Big Brother is already watching them, interacting with this novel will prove to be timely and thought provoking.
