My Students

Our elementary is a suburban school with mixed demographics. Approximately 25% of students come from low-income families. Many students live in apartments, or in single parent homes and blended families. Two of the students have a parent in prison, and two have a deceased parent. The average test scores for language arts are only 60%. Low-test score concerns have caused a big push to increase reading fluency and comprehension.

I want to introduce my students to the love of reading by using genres that teach equity and diversity.

Using 6th grade level books, I make reading fun by having weekly Book Club meetings! We eat lunch together, I provide a treat, and we talk books! I love how much the students enjoy the Book Club and how excited they get about reading!

As of this week, we have a hybrid schedule and the students will only come to school four days per week. The students need access to books they can take home to read the books during the remote days. Your donation will help promote literacy in our school. Thank you for helping us!

My Project

I want to purchase a class set of books of called, "A Long Walk to Water" to teach my students about racial injustice, and the need for educational reform in the world. This is a compelling true account of two lives that were interconnected through an African village and a need for a water well. It is inspiring, heart wrenching, thought provoking and a fabulous educational tool to teach young people about the world problems.

This book is a powerful tool to teach racial equality, diversity, world culture, acceptance and the need for global changes.

I want my students to read this story, to gain a better understanding and appreciation for racial inequalities in the world, and why the world needs change! There is no better way to demonstrate privilege and the need for education, than through the eyes of people who weren't afforded these luxuries..

In the 6th Grade we learn about Ancient World civilizations, and current day government systems in the world. The best way to teach about racial injustice in the world is for my students to learn about them firsthand. This book is a fabulous teaching tool, and it highlights the need for every student to become educated, and to work to make global changes!

I want to provide literature of different diversities that teach equity through compassion, and real-life examples. I want my students to discover that one person can make a change and become an activist, no matter how old you are! I am grateful for all the help I can get with this.
