Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

English Language Learners and students in neighborhoods like Bushwick face unique educational challenges but deserve an equal chance at high-quality instruction. ELL students benefit from hands-on and visual resources that enhance comprehension, while students in Bushwick bring resilience, creativity, and diverse cultural perspectives that enrich their learning community. When they’re given supportive tools and high expectations, these students thrive. Ensuring that all students, regardless of language or background, have access to engaging resources creates an inclusive environment and demonstrates a commitment to every child’s potential.

Fraction strips, dry erase boards, and document cameras are powerful tools for building confidence in struggling math students.

Fraction strips make abstract fraction concepts concrete, allowing students to visualize and compare fractions, which strengthens their understanding. Dry erase boards offer a non-permanent space where students can freely practice, make mistakes, and try again without fear, promoting a growth mindset. Document cameras, meanwhile, support group learning by projecting student work for shared problem-solving. This guided, interactive learning makes math more accessible and reduces anxiety, encouraging students to engage with challenging concepts.

Using fraction strips, dry erase boards, and document cameras in math supports students’ social-emotional learning (SEL) by fostering resilience, teamwork, and a growth mindset. Fraction strips help students work through math concepts in manageable steps, reinforcing perseverance. Dry erase boards provide a judgment-free zone where students can take risks and learn from mistakes, empowering them to embrace challenges and build self-confidence. Document cameras encourage collaboration by allowing students to share strategies and learn from one another in a supportive setting. This interactive environment helps students feel safe, valued, and motivated, cultivating SEL skills like self-awareness, social awareness, and responsible decision-making.
