Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have too much stacked against them, born and growing up in one of the poorest districts in the country. Meanwhile, learning with technology seems to benefit those who have the means.

They value learning, they want to succeed, and they want to do good in this community.

In other words, they are not that different from students in more affluent communities. But they lack funding in their local public schools. As I mentioned above, they come from one of the poorest districts in New York, but their desires to succeed are often vanquished by lack of opportunities.

My Project

As a doctoral student in Instructional Technology, I've learned a specific way to incorporate 3D printing in a custom-written physics curriculum. They will design and print out desktop-sized catapults and/or trebuchet, while learning a) proportional reasoning, b) measuring with significant figures, c) using SI system, d) unit conversion, and thinking parametrically. In the subsequent units, they will use the constructed catapults or trebuchet to learn the classic mechanics, especially focusing on 2D motion and projectiles, as well as energy transfer within a system.

I am hoping that, with your donation, my students will, not only gain an opportunity to experience a rigorous but exciting physics and mathematics curriculum, but also become inspired to be a scientist, a technologist, an engineer, or a mathematician.

Too many adults, even among some teachers, do not believe that my students can succeed in this technology saturated world. I believe they will flourish.
