Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 4 different classes this year. The first is an Honors class that will be taking the U.S. History and Government Regents, this year. This will be the first time our school is offering our 8th graders this opportunity.
Another class is Dual Language, where students learn in both English and Spanish.
The third is a Gen Ed class. My fourth class is the ENL students, or newcomers. These students are new to the United States and the English language. They come in throughout the year as well. While some are almost fluent, some do not speak English at all. They come from all over the world. It's like the United Nations.
All of these students need varying supports to help them do their best, I want to help give them the opportunity to use technology to not only translate words, but to help them connect to the community as a whole.
My Project
Using tablets, students can work in their groups to do translations, and study documents and resources in their chosen language. A variety of languages are spoken in the classroom, with students coming in throughout the year.
Additionally, I am one of the lead teachers for NYCDOE's new Civics for All Initiative.
Students can use these tablets to access Civics-based resources used to empower students to get involved in their community and feel they have a voice. For example, Checkology is a News Literacy Resource used to teacher students how to recognize fake news and responsible journalism. Students can also used these to help conduct research for Project Soapbox, a national competition where students can make speeches about topics and issues important to them.
