My Project

Just like athletes need their gear and musicians need their instruments, our student journalists need their cameras. Our Journalism program has grown over the last few years and with that growth comes a need for more equipment and upgraded equipment. Within both our Yearbook and Newspaper staff, my 30 students work tirelessly to capture the stories of West High’s 1800 students. However, we currently only have 2 DSLR cameras. Last year alone, our student journalists took over 100,000 photos for use in the yearbook, online news site, and print newsmagazine.

Every day our students are photographing and documenting the stories in everything from classroom activities to pep assemblies, theater performances, football games, and so much more.

However, with only two cameras there are many times when events can’t be covered and enthusiastic students are told “We don’t have a camera available, but we will make sure you can photograph the next thing!” In our lack of equipment, we have to prioritize which stories get told.

With our current equipment, our students have created award-winning publications. However, they are ready to bring it to the next level. In the last two years, our Yearbook has brought home 30+ awards for their design, writing, and photography work. In addition to this, our Newspaper team has been named an All-Iowa News Team of the Year for two consecutive years after restarting the program in 2022. As our program continues to thrive and find success, our students are ready to take more photos and learn on professional, industry-standard equipment.

Our current situation is not enough to meet the needs of our yearbook and newspaper staff. Adding new equipment would allow us to meet the demand of our student journalists and help better cover our West High student body in our publications.
