Help Mrs. Deraps

I teach English to at-risk students who come from unpredictable, unstable homes. Several of my current juniors are in danger of dropping out of high school. Some of them are frustrated by the fact that much of what we read has little to do with their lives. Others think that they'll be able to make a living if they drop out of school and go to work for their families. I'd like to show them the realities of blue collar work in America and just how hard it can be to earn a living without a high school diploma and/ or a college education.

Many of my students work for their families or for local farmers, loggers, and small businesses that are being hurt by the downturn in the economy. I want to show my students that they're not going to get anywhere faster if they drop out of their free public education in favor of the minimum or below minimum wage jobs they're working at now. I want my students to think through the repercussions of dropping out and not continuing with their educations. "Nickel and Dimed," part of which takes place in our state, would afford us these discussions.

I need twelve copies of "Nickel and Dimed: On Not Getting By in America" to help convince my eleventh-grade students to stay in school. I want to show them the hard road that a life without a diploma and/or college will force them to travel. These kids are bright kids but are just not completely engaged in school and have been tempted away by the promise of a job on local farms or in the woods. I'd like to see them graduate and keep open the possibility of continuing their education at a technical or four-year college. I want them to see that a degree in business could help them start their own farm or woods operation and that education opens doors for future passions.

Please help me to have real-world conversations with my students about the choices that they're currently making. I want to show them that a minimum wage paycheck will not be enough to ensure that they are able to accomplish all of their life goals, including home ownership and raising a family. Nickel and Dimed will help them to see these points from a different perspective.
