My Students

The students in my classroom come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds which makes teaching them not only a challenge but an adventure as well. We are a school-wide Title I school and all students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. My goal as a classroom teacher is to help as many students as we can come out of poverty to provide better lives for themselves. If I can grab their curiosity and encourage them to be lifelong learners, then they will be well on their way to changing their circumstances.

Our school is the largest elementary school in our district with almost 800 students in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

Many of the students at our school come from poverty stricken homes and sometimes the best part of their day is being with us in a comfortable learning environment.

My Project

My students LOVE having hands-on experiences with science. Hands on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects allows students to have first hand experience on how things work. STEM projects also give students the chance to work together and collaborate to complete a task that is engaging. This helps to build their science knowledge as well as their self-esteem.

With so many students who are visual and hands on learners the lack of materials to bring science to life is a real problem.

This grant would allow students opportunities to think deeply and problem solve while working as collaborator to complete the STEM activity. The Lakeshore STEM kits would give my students hands-on experiences with the kinds of science materials we used to have funded through our science kits yearly. I am also requesting quality books to have my students read about the science material they are learning about through their science textbooks and STEM activities.
