Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a very high poverty school in an inner city school in New York. I teach a third grade monolingual special needs class.

It is almost impossible for me to expect my students to sit and listen actively on a carpet that has been infested by creepy crawlers and that has gum stuck in it from years past and not to mention those horrible mystery stains. For these reasons I was forced to throw out our old rug and now my special needs students are forced to sit on the concrete floor. My students complain after sitting on the floor for just a few minutes that their bottoms are in pain and this truly breaks my heart. I have students with learning disabilities and physical disabilities and it hurts me to see that they are in pain while I'm conducting a lesson or a read aloud.

If granted this beautiful carpet and the comfy floor chairs, I know that my special needs students will be active listeners during read aloud and during lessons. This carpet will also grant some them a quiet place to go during their silent reading time. They won't be distracted by the pain they are feeling while sitting on hard concrete.

My special needs students already have a difficult time day to day adapting to their environment why not grant them this carpet which will give them a place to get together and forget about their troubles at least for a little while. I ask that you please grant these students an opportunity to enjoy learning (pain free) on a beautiful and spacious rug and floor chairs.
