Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Language is a beautiful thing. My students come in speaking a variety of home languages. Many speak Spanish at home. I want to help bridge the language gap and incorporate both native languages and English into the classroom.

I teach about 90 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in an urban public school in DC.

Many of my students speak Spanish as a native language. Other students are interested in learning the language as their friends learn English. The students are curious and love hands on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences.

My Project

I am asking for both Spanish language Science readers and Spanish textbooks. The Science readers will allow my students who are more familiar with the Spanish language to still access the Science content. I am asking for books in a variety of content areas, including light and color, electricity, space, and other topics that we cover throughout our year. These books will allow students who struggle with reading in English to have the same educational opportunities in Science as others. In addition, the Spanish language books will help all my students. Students who are stronger in Spanish already can ensure that they have practice with the language so they do not lose their skills. In addition, it will enable other students who are not native speakers to learn the language.

I want every student in my class to have access to the Science content regardless of their English abilities.

These books will help me provide that content to my students in a way that they are able to access it. It will also provide an enriching experience with the Spanish language for my other students.
