My Students

Normal is not a word that is used frequently in 6Broadway. Normal implies sticking to set standards. The students in 6Broadway strive to be unique and embrace their differences.

I am a Special Educator that works with a class of 28 students in an inclusive middle school classroom.

Twelve of these students have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to provide attentional services for a wide range of learning disabilities. I work with four co-teachers to provide multiple entry points and accommodations for all students to each lesson. In addition, to diverse learning abilities, my students come from various religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school culture teaches students to excel in their education to become tomorrow's leaders. In this setting we must foster respect to build a collaborative learning environment. My co-teachers and I work hard to provide the best holistic education for our students. We are truly a rainbow of diversity.

My Project

I envision that the classroom iPad would be used for many reasons. First, this is tool to enhance images and readings for visual and tactile learners. Students can search and zoom in on key images to help contextualize the content. Materials can be differentiated for multiple reading levels in ELA, Social Studies, and Science. Access to iPad will serve as an incentive for exemplary behavior to use for enrichment during daily lessons in all classes. In addition, this instrument will provide immediate feedback on student work. For example, students will have access to immediate comments they can use to further improve their work. The class iPad will allow our teaching team to monitor student records of academic performance so that we can individualize attention to our struggling learners and provide extensions to our top scholars. These records will serve to provide more actionable goals for our students.

Technology engages students in the lesson and provides multiple entry points for all learners.

Strong visuals and tactile learning is the forefront of our changing education system. The iPad services these essential needs. In addition, the cycle of feedback is essential for student academic growth. The ability to provide immediate feedback on student work will guide students to set meaningful goals and success on their assignments.
