Help Mrs. Lee

All students need to do and present research projects in order to become future problem-solvers. However, there are a very limited number of informational texts available to lower grade children. Although my second graders love such activities, they struggle to read above grade level magazines, educational websites, or books. Most of them finished their projects, but many felt frustrated with the reading, worked with only one source, or often just asked an adult to find information... Usually African American students make up 70% of my class; the rest includes a rich diversity of cultures such as Latino and Asian. Since we are a Social Justice Magnet School, we are teaching respect, tolerance, appreciation, and teamwork. Our students are aware of the issues awaiting them and they are getting ready! Unfortunately, my school is a title I LAUSD with minimum funding and most of our parents can't afford donations. I wish to buy informational texts level 1, 2, and 3, books relating to our 2nd grade curriculum (animal camouflage, fossils, and biographies.) This library would allow all my twenty students to complete the work because they would have access to information at their reading level; they will be able to take interesting notes, write a report, design a presentation, and present their project in front of the class and a camera! (They enjoy studying the video afterwards!) Research offers invaluable experiences. These projects require the child to be actively involved; they develop their personality, independence, and critical skills. Students love this type of work because they feel in control. Reading, writing, and speaking improve significantly just because the child is motivated! Additionally, research skills are crucial to solve the problems we are now facing.
