This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is full of future scientists including potential paleontologists. We need more hands-on scientific specimens that can excite my students and encourage them to stay in school and pursue careers in science.

My students are wonderful second graders.Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California.

The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college. My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream autistic students and learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom. In addition, I partner for science with a 3rd grade buddy class and a class of hard of hearing second graders and they will also participate in this project.

Currently, we have weekly STEAM rotations where my students and their buddies work in small groups to complete a set of STEAM activities. My students love these activities! I try to make my science, math, and art lessons exciting by bringing these lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the STEAM curriculum.

My Project

We will soon begin an Earth Sciences unit in both our language arts and science curriculums. The requested Fossil Collection Sorting Activity Kits, the Hands-On Exploration Fossil kit, and the fossilized shark teeth will enable my students to really experience the science lessons they are reading about in their science books. My students will be able to look at the fossils and examine, describe, and compare them. They will also be able to carefully look at the fern fossils with their magnifying glasses. We will use these supplies as part of our weekly STEAM rotations.

The ceramic glazes will be used as a culminating activity for our Earth Science unit after we finish learning about dinosaurs and fossils.

My students will make dinosaurs out of clay. The ceramic glazes will be used to paint them in vibrant colors before they are put back in the kiln. I know my students are going to love looking at their amazing dinosaur creations!

My students love science and art! I try to make my science lessons exciting by bringing their lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the science curriculum. I want my students to be able to see fossils that most of them have only seen pictures of in their science book. I want them to use the art materials to create their own masterpieces that they will want to treasure. I hope this project helps to inspire my students' imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in the STEAM fields.
