My Students

Imagine the challenges of being a middle-school student, distance learning using all kinds of technology and new programs, changes and uncertainties brought on by COVID, and trying to learn new math skills. Overwhelmed yet??

I am a 5th and 6th grade middle school math teacher in a small, rural school district.

Some of the challenges faced in our area are poverty, a high population of students who speak English as a second language, and students with a variety of special needs. However, I have never seen a group of students or community come together like the community that I teach in. If any students deserve my very best efforts, it is these!

My Project

With a Money Sense Financial Literacy Collection Kit, students will have opportunities to complete hands-on mathematics lessons and activities that will teach them foundations of financial literacy skills. Financial literacy skills are vital for students' future success, and students are never too young to start building a strong foundation. Many of our students do not have other opportunities to learn or be taught these principles outside of the classroom, so it is vital that these skills are incorporated into the math instruction they are already receiving. By utilizing the books, games and manipulatives in the requested kit, student motivation and engagement will increase, which will result in an increase in their proficiency and confidence!
