My Students

Some of my students have lived in our city their entire lives. Others are now starting their second week of school in a new, unfamiliar city. They hail from countries all over the world, many starting their journey in South or Central American countries or the Caribbean. Fortunately for me, fate brought them to Miami, Florida.

I work at a Title One school where eighty-six percent of our students are classified by the government as low-income.

As the education system in Florida is reeling from budget cuts at both the state and federal level, our low-income students and students of color are hit the hardest.

My students are constantly brimming with creative energy; they are intellectual, opinionated and generally scintillating. As eleventh graders, they are often caught in the uncomfortable limbo between holding onto their innocence as children and navigating the hardships of the adult world. Sometimes this results in exhilarating progress, other times in disappointment. It is all beautiful.

My Project

Every student needs different things from the learning environment. Bean bag chairs will provide students with an alternative seating arrangement so they can decide what is best for their own learning. Many students find it easier to concentrate when sitting comfortably on the floor rather than at a hard desk. My students also had the awesome idea of getting lap desks so that they can have a hard surface to work on.

Students learn best when they feel like their classroom truly belongs to them and a dynamic physical environment goes a long way towards establishing that feeling.

Without your help, many of my students will be sitting on uncomfortable or broken chairs.

Your help will also go towards office supplies such as a printer cable and toner, which will enable me to more reliably provide individual copies of class materials to students. Being able to give students their own copy of materials instead of having them reuse a class set, makes a huge difference because they can take notes on the documents. Students will also need to print out their own documents for editing and annotation. Cleaning supplies will allow me to keep the computers and work surfaces clean.
