My Students

I teach 32 refugee students from 11 different countries who speak 15 different languages.

My students have little to no formal education before they come to the United States. Most do not speak any English when they get here, but they are expected to pass all state exams in one year. These student come here for a better life and they struggle each day with great dedication and determination to succeed.

My Project

Our district has decided to implement a language arts program that was not designed with English language learners in mind. New York state has come up with its own curriculum that meets common core standards and addresses all tasks on the state exam. The only problem with this curriculum is that it requires novels my school does not have money to purchase. I have requested a class set of the novel, The Lightning Thief, by Percy Jackson so my students will be able to learn all of the sixth grade language arts skills at a more attainable level, with high interest texts, and over a longer period of time. By using a novel to learn skills, we can spend more time on the novel and go far more in depth in our reading.

One simple book will help my students achieve a great level of success.

By working together through high interest texts, my students will experience a great deal of success and foster a love for reading.
