Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth and sixth grade Special Needs teacher at a Middle School in the Bronx. I teach ten emotionally disturbed and learning disabled students between the ages of 10 and 14, all of whom qualify for free lunch. My best students comprehend on only a third grade reading level. Getting my students to read is a constant struggle; fourteen year olds do not want to read The Cat in the Hat. At the beginning of the year, I was provided with almost no books. While our library has grown through donations, we do not have multiple copies of any titles. Having multiple copies of each book will allow my students to work together, developing their reading skills and interpersonal relationships. I want to build a classroom of students that want to talk about books and want to talk about reading. I cannot do this without multiple copies of high-interest low readability books. This grant will provide us with five copies each of 10 fiction and 10 non-fiction titles, plus a teacher guide. The set also includes worksheets to help the students develop their comprehension and vocabulary while stimulating class discussion. These books will allow my students to become engaged in their reading while taking pride in completing chapter books and working together. I want to provide my students with books that they can get excited about and books that we can read together. These two sets will provide us with the opportunity to read about a diverse group of topics that will captivate my students at their reading level. My students are at a critical point in their reading lives. Motivating them now with these exciting titles will help ensure that they become readers for life. By funding this grant you will help put us all on the same page, reading each book together as a classroom of learners.
