My Students

I didn't choose to become a teacher, teaching chose me. I started out as a substitute teacher in Camden, New Jersey as a side gig and little did I know how much my life would change. I realized how important it is for students to have a positive role model who understands them and I'm here to make a change!

I currently teach a course called Freshman Experience.

The class is based on literacy and helping my students build life skills that will help them get through high school and beyond. My students are mostly African American and Hispanic. They face many of the challenges teens face growing up in an inner city environment. We are also battling the achievement gap that minorities in America are dealing with nationwide. My students need more than a "traditional" education. Everything in this project is geared towards giving students knowledge of self and knowledge of wealth. The goal is to give students the proper understanding of the world they live in and how they can survive in it. The education they will receive will stretch far beyond a classroom.

My Project

The materials included in this project will help my students improve their literacy levels as well as provide the necessary technology it takes to keep up with today's fast paced society. Included in this project are books for a class library that will help improve literacy levels. Books like "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" will help change their perspective in a positive way and bring awareness to financial literacy. Also, with the lack of adequate technology students will be given iPads and headphones for class learning centers.

My goal for my students is 2 years of reading growth.

Meaning, if my students are currently reading on a 9th grade level, by the end of this school year I want them on an 11th grade reading level. Sadly, with this being my first year as a full time teacher, I can't provide the adequate resources to accomplish this goal. This project will give the class the resources to make the most impact and with your help I will be able to change the lives of America's future!
