Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from diverse backgrounds, residing in district 7 in the Bronx, one of the most under served districts in our city. They are bright, charismatic, kind, and energetic children who have the drive and passion to succeed. However, they are often faced with various obstacles like homelessness, malnutrition, mental illness, loss, abuse, and many other situations our children should not go through. Every day they make it to school and our goal is to make it a wonderful experience. Our children are 11-15, many have the wisdom of individuals much older. Our children are gifted, they are talented, and need the resources to excel and enhance their skills. Our children have so many extraordinary ideas and my job is to ensure they come to life!

My Project

Serving the population we do leaves us with many areas to tackle. We aim to not only help our children grow academically but also social emotionally. We want them to be well-rounded individuals with the ability to address the issues they may face with mental health, wellness, and behaviorally. Our children already begin at a disadvantage and so this is our way to ensure they are ahead and beyond.

Providing them with the skills necessary to be resilient, adaptable, and reflective will help them in the long run be productive, successful, and caring members of our communities.

Our students deserve to acquire the coping skills necessary to combat the obstacles thrown at them. They face traumatic experiences daily and need the tools to manage these stressors. These therapeutic tools are the beginning of a long journey. We included items like yoga mats and mindfulness material to promote a space where we can practice tranquility and helping students center themselves. Also, we have included ice breakers and getting to know you games to help therapy be as productive and efficient as possible.

Additionally, other items include fidget toys and stress toys to help students deal with the every day pressures they face. Our main goal is to help them self soothe, manage their emotions, and be able to maintain and sustain healthy relationships. Mental health needs to be at the forefront of our work with children as It is an ever growing issue.
