My Students

My students are members of our school Project LIT chapter, part of a national literacy movement of educators and students committed to increasing access to diverse books and promoting a love of reading

These students are passionate about books and deeply committed to social justice.

They give up their lunch and recess to join in important discussions about the books we read. They believe in the power of books and are eager to share their love of reading.

Even though we are remote, their enthusiasm hasn't diminished at all. Our Project LIT chapter kept meeting throughout the spring. We even met once over the summer! We are really excited and proud to be part of the Project LIT community!

My Project

My kind and wonderful Project LIT book club members love to read and they especially love to read books that center racial and social justice. In December, we want to join Project LIT chapters across the country and read Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. Long Way Down is a hauntingly beautiful novel written in verse that has won numerous awards. The graphic novel adaptation just came out and it is stunning. Both these versions are so accessible to readers, even those who may struggle.

My students read with their hearts and minds wide open.

This book will teach them, challenge them, and inspire them. It will allow us to talk about grief and loss, about feeling trapped, and about how we determine what the right choices are. It's a powerful and profound book that I know will stick with my students forever.
