Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students LOVE reading! It is their favorite time of day. Because my students live in an underserved community, they typically have deficits in their foundational reading skills.
Our school focuses on rigorous, daily phonics instruction to ensure that students will learn to read.
When students practice reading independently, they can apply the phonics skills they are learning and learning is accelerated. They also become fluent readers. This leads them to acquire a lifelong love of reading that will follow them throughout their lives.
My Project
Our summer school program runs for eight weeks and provides daily literacy instruction to the students. However, it doesn’t have books available for the students to take home to practice reading on their own. By supporting my project, you will be making it possible for the students to read at home every night this summer. When students don’t read during the summer, they experience “summer slide.”
It is estimated that the summer slide accounts for as much as 85% of the reading achievement gap between lower income students and their middle- and upper- income peers.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
