My Students

My students are archaeology addicts! Last year, my fourth graders made an incredible discovery. Hidden in hollow spaces under closet floorboards in our building was an amazing trove of artifacts dating back to our school building's construction in 1913.

These kids are amazingly diverse in every way.

Children of every ethnic background, race, language, religion, economic status, family configuration, academic level--they all come together in our small, community-minded public elementary school in New York City. Last winter, my students began poking around in a small hollow space under our classroom closet--and in no time, they were coming up with everything from Mercury dimes, to ancient Snow White bubble gum wrappers, to 1933 Christmas seals, hatters' business cards, 10-cent movie tickets, and more. Soon other teachers opened their doors to my students and they began retrieving items from other closets as well. As the semester continued, kids researched artifacts, wrote about their finds, and learned more about the disciplines of archaeology and coin collecting. This unexpected story continues this year as they return during their lunch time to expand their excavations and research.

My Project

We now have hundreds of artifacts, with more waiting to be discovered this year. It is imperative that we obtain archival storage materials in order to maintain these artifacts in their present good condition, so that these students and students of the future can continue to learn from them about the history of our school, our neighborhood, and the broader world. The materials I am requesting were recommended by professional museum conservators who have volunteered to help with our work.

These supplies, as my students themselves wrote, will allow us to organize and preserve the artifacts so that others can "view our interesting and peculiar finds and be inspired to delve deeper into New York City's history, and learn about their school's history too." It has been an incredible inspiration to see the students' dedication to this project.

Preserving the artifacts properly will be a wonderful tribute to them and gift to future students and members of our community.
