Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many people believe that Shakespeare's works are too difficult for struggling students or students who are English Language Learners. This project is designed to prove those folks wrong. As Joseph Papp once said, "Shakespeare belongs to everyone."

I teach tenth-grade English Language Arts in a high-needs school for English Language Learners in the South Bronx.

My students have acute literacy needs in English, as well as in their native languages (Spanish, Arabic, Wolof, Bengali, and French). Many of my students have had interruptions in their formal education; these gaps significantly impair their ability to make connections when learning new material. Despite these odds, my students are incredibly vibrant and resilient. They continually help each other to learn in the classroom, and employ a wide range of strategies to make meaning and to increase their understanding. They are smart, savvy, and spirited. They enjoy, and learn best from, authentic experiences that engage them in multiple modalities.

My Project

In class, we will be reading Shakespeare's play, Othello, using differentiated graphic novels. The Classic Stage's workshops and performance will help my students to access and understand the plot, themes, and, most importantly, Shakespeare's language. The workshops will create opportunities for my students to participate in activities that will engage them in reading the text and seeing the performance. The performance itself will help the text to come alive, and to experience the play as it was intended -- performed by actors on the stage. After having these experiences, students will be able to create their own interpretations of the text and performance, as well as to make connections to their own lives.

Most of my students have never seen a live theater performance.

This project will create an opportunity for them to have a set of authentic experiences, in terms of their participation in workshops and seeing a live performance.
