My Students

Remember reading class where you read boring textbooks? My students are older and becoming uninterested in literature. Reading is a skill that they need to master. Why not actively engage them in picture books from published authors to teach comprehension strategies and avoid that boredom trap?

I teach Reading and Language Arts to half of the 5th graders in a small town in Illinois.

I co-teach with the Special Education teacher in one of my Reading and Language Arts Classes. My students' reading levels can range anywhere from 2nd grade to 7th grade in one reading class. My students view reading as “uncool”; at this point in their lives they are more interested in their social lives. This is a crucial age where either they want to become life-long readers or give up on reading for good. Their attitudes about reading are easily and directly influenced by their reading program. They are hard workers, but need good examples of published author's work to help inspire them to want to read. Many of my students just don’t have good literature at home; whether that be financial or other reasons.

My Project

At the Middle School age, reading is no longer viewed as cool. It is my job as their reading teacher to promote good literature, make reading as exciting as possible, and challenge students to become better readers. Their reading curriculum is out-dated and their textbooks are not very interesting. At this age, it is important for them to be reading excellent authors. They should be inspired by their reading lessons, not bored to death by them. With these picture books, their whole reading curriculum will change by implementing the Reading Workshop. They will be taught comprehension skills through the use of picture books. They will learn standard-based lessons covering point of view, theme, visualizing, predicting, inferring, summarizing, questioning, etc using an actual author's work. Their lessons will become interactive, think-aloud lessons that will engage students and improve comprehension. Our main focus it to keep the students interested in reading during this crucial period.

Please help our students enjoy and continue to want to read.

Help our small school district update our uninteresting reading curriculum. If this project is granted, my students will enjoy their reading class much more. They will be exposed to many different authors and will learn comprehension skills that will help them become better readers. After all, reading is such a valuable tool to have in life! Our reading program and our small town needs your help!
